An avid and accomplished photographer, John Baran travels extensively to photograph his subjects in their natural environments. These firsthand experiences are a vital part of his painting process. Through photographing, sketching, and spending extended time observing animal behavior, he develops a deep connection to his subjects—one that translates into artwork that feels energetic, expressive, and alive. He has swum with killer whales, sharks, giant manta rays, manatees, and dolphins, and on land has walked among white rhinos, Cape buffalo, leopards, lions, American alligators, black bears, and African elephants. Together, these encounters inform a body of work that blends abstraction and wildlife into a vibrant celebration of life across the land, sky, and sea.
